Veneers enhance the beauty and appeal of a wooden surface. But it is also a well-known fact that if you are using veneers on the surface of a furniture, then it requires a lot of care to enhance the longevity of the furniture.
The following is the ultimate list of 11 tips for better veneer care, which should help you to preserve the surface of your furniture. These would also reduce your maintenance cost and time. Enjoy your freedom from repeated snags and replacements!
Guide for better veneer care:
- Veneers must be kept in a clean, dust-free environment, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Ensure that the surface is covered properly from all the four sides in order to avoid any damage.
- Veneers should be stacked horizontally to prevent buckling of the sheets. We recommend that you place them in a way that the decorative side of one plywood faces the decorative side of another.
- It is highly recommended that when veneers arrive at the construction site, a coat of sealer be applied to the surface in order to protect them from dust or impression of hands of the site laborers. This is a very important veneer care.
- It is recommended that veneered plywood be glued to the surface of the furniture rather than getting it nailed, for better finish and polish. Kindly speak to your interior designer/building contractor for further guidance.
- The veneers should be glued to the surface of the furniture using a strong, good quality synthetic resin adhesive. Sufficient masking tapes should be used and pressure must be applied by pressing down or using weights to ensure strong and uniform bonding.
- Prior to application of polish, sand paper should be used to remove dust particles. Sand paper should be rubbed gently in the direction of the grain of the wood (never across it).
- Furniture should be kept in a horizontal position by the finisher when it is to be sanded. Not less than 150 grit sand papers should be used to remove all handling marks and raised grains.
- We recommend that you use branded acrylic, water based, polyurethane, or polyester polish to achieve the best possible finish. Kindly speak to your interior designer/ contractor for further guidance.
- It is strongly advised that melamine based polish should not be used, especially on dyed and light colored veneers. Applying melamine based polish on veneer enhances the chances of its discoloration over a period of time.
- Melamine based polishes are neither environment friendly nor health friendly. To know more about the hazards, speak to your interior designer/contractor. Ask him about the available alternatives and then insist on using one of the alternatives, in case he bats for a melamine based polish.
- After a furniture is polished, it should be regularly dusted with a slightly damp, soft, lint-free cloth. Doing this everyday would increase the life of your veneers.
