Persistent moisture is an issue for bathrooms, kitchens, basement rooms and coastal homes. Selecting the incorrect type can result in warping, swelling and delamination in as little as a few months. To get it right from the beginning is to be able to save money and the trouble of frequent replacement.

Why Humidity Is Hard on Regular Doors

Normal flush doors are normally constructed with a wooden or cardboard core which easily absorbs moisture. The core expands unevenly when it becomes humid. This leads to warping, sticking and unsightly cracks on the door surface. A flush door will not have the strength in a space that has to withstand steam and condensation on a daily basis.

Look for Moisture Resistant Core Materials

The block board of a flush door is the most influential factor when it comes to moisture control. The block board or particle board doors may appear strong at first but are not very strong in wet conditions. The alternative is a door with an engineered wood or plywood core that has been treated or made to prevent moisture from getting into it. The more densely and evenly the core is packed, the more stable the door will be dimensionally.

Surface Laminates and Finishes Matter

A flush door’s exterior needs to be as significant as its contents. In humid regions, adhesion to core is critical and laminates are necessary. Poorly bonded laminate will bubble, peel or crack under steam. Sealed surface treatments that are of a high quality that seal the door and its edges help to minimize the amount of moisture that can enter the door. When dealing with edge sealing, never neglect it as the exposed edges are the most susceptible points.

Check the Door’s Moisture Resistance Rating

Moisture resistance ratings or certifications are given by reputable manufacturers that test their flush doors for resistance to moisture. If you’re replacing wet area doors, be sure to search for doors that are clearly marked or described as moisture and/or waterproof. Manufacturers such as Duroply make engineered flush doors, which are used for situations with high humidity all the time that structural strength is necessary. It’s a good idea to ask your supplier or retailer if they know that it has been tested to whatever standards are required.

Frame and Installation Play a Role Too

Even the best flush door can be deficient if the frame around it is not quite as well suited to humid conditions. Metal or engineered wood frames hold up much better in damp environments than untreated solid timber frames. Installation without any gaps at the bottom or sides will prevent moisture from accumulating around the door. A gap of a small size for airflow, along with proper airflow in the room, prevents moisture from collecting on the door surfaces as well as the frame.

Maintenance Tips to Extend Door Life

Selecting the door is just half the job. Regularly wiped-up surfaces to eliminate condensation, flowing exhaust fans in the bathroom and resealing exposed edges on wood doors every couple of years all help to extend the life of a door. Do not allow mops or towels to be propped up against flush doors for long periods of time. Even the best selected door can last a long time in a high humidity setting when these simple habits are used

It is a good idea to choose moisture-resistant flush doors, which will reward you for many years to come. Get best results from the frame and door, the core material, the surface finish and the edge sealing.

Although flush doors are now a popular choice for contemporary interiors, not every flush door can excel in wet or damp conditions.
