From opulent residential interiors to expansive commercial fit-outs, the grade, thickness and core composition of plywood can have a significant influence on structure, finish and durability. Knowing how to read and use the plywood specifications will help you to avoid some expensive site mistakes and ensure that your design vision is in use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Understanding Plywood Grades<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plywood is identified by the quality of the face and back veneers. The most popular grading system is based on the use of alphabetical grades A, B, C and D, A being a smooth defect-free surface for visible applications, and D being a utility grade for concealed structural applications. A or B grade face veneer is required for furniture, cabinetry and wall panelling to guarantee a clean surface with no imperfections or grain inconsistencies to show through laminate, veneer or paint finishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thickness Selection Based on Application<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The choice of thickness should be determined by the need for structure of the application. Normally 9mm to 12mm plywood will suffice when used for wall cladding and lightweight partitions. To distribute loads, 18mm to 19mm panels are normally used for flooring and platform framing. 18mm to 25mm is the recommended size range for heavy duty shelving, modular furniture or kitchen shutters. If specified incorrectly, even by a few millimetres, it can lead to a joint that is not robust and to deflection under constant load.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Core Types and Why They Matter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond the surface, a plywood panel&#8217;s look, the life of its core plays a crucial role in its performance. MR grade (moisture resistant) plywood made with urea formaldehyde bonding agent; suitable for interior use in low humidity areas. BWR (boiling water resistant) is suitable in kitchens, bathrooms and semi-exterior use as it is stronger glued. In coastal areas or locations where moisture is always present, a BWP grade (boiling waterproof) plywood is recommended and should always be the minimum specification in these areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">IS Standards Every Designer Should Know<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plywood specifications in India are regulated by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) standards, mainly IS 303 for general purpose and IS 710 for marine grade plywood. Always ensure the product has a valid ISI certification mark when ordering panels. Architects and designers have the confidence of a baseline of quality assurance with Duroply&#8217;s plywood that meets these standards. Once you know which IS is applicable for the scope your project is going to go through, you&#8217;ll be better equipped to avoid having to deal with materials that are not a good fit, as well as to bolster your specification documentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Veneer Species and Surface Finish Compatibility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The kind of wood the face veneer is made of influences the receptiveness of the face veneer to adhesives, laminates, and surface coatings. Teak and Gurjan face veneers are compact and provide a great bond of high-pressure laminates. A primer coat may be needed before painting lighter species as they tend to absorb paint unevenly. When your design includes exposed wood grain, your veneer species may turn out to be more of a visual specification than a technical one. For large scale uses, always ask for a physical sample first before deciding on the species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Specifying Plywood in Project Documentation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The grade, thickness, core type, IS standard and application zone should be mentioned in your BOQ or tender document in a well written Plywood specification. Specifications like &#8220;plywood as required&#8221; can be used to replace materials for lower prices, which may result in poorer quality.
