3 Quick Tests to Verify Anti-Borer Plywood at the Shop** Walk into any plywood shop and you’ll hear the same line: “Sir/Madam, this plywood is termite-proof and borer-proof.” Sounds great… but is it always true? Sadly, not always. Many shops use this as a selling line because customers expect to hear it. Some plywood is genuinely treated. Some is partially treated. And some is only “marketing treatment” — meaning printed on the sheet but not actually effective. So how do you know the truth? Good news: you don’t need a lab or a microscope. You can verify anti-borer plywood at the shop with 3 simple tests that take less than 2 minutes.

In India, climate plays a big role: – Humid cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi – Dusty and warm areas like Delhi, Jaipur – Coastal regions – Towns with older buildings These places are high-risk zones for termites and borers. Once these pests enter plywood: – Your furniture weakens – Powder starts falling out of tiny holes – Laminates bubble – Doors lose alignment – Entire wardrobes collapse from inside The worst part? Repairing termite damage costs more than buying high-quality plywood in the first place

There are two levels: 1. Surface Treatment Only the outer layer is sprayed with chemicals. Looks good but doesn’t last. 2. Core Treatment (The real deal) Every layer—from core to face—is chemically treated using: – Vacuum pressure treatment – Borax/Boric compounds – Phenol formaldehyde bonding This is the plywood that truly resists pests for 10+ years.

Yes — this is surprisingly effective. Genuine anti-borer plywood has a very distinct chemical smell. What you should do Hold the plywood at its freshly cut edge and take a whiff. What genuine anti-borer plywood smells like – Strong phenolic smell – Slightly pungent – Chemical, almost like resin – You may feel it in your nose for a second This smell comes from PF (Phenol Formaldehyde) resin and borate treatment.

This one also takes just 5 seconds. How to test Lift a full 18mm plywood sheet from one side. Genuine core-treated plywood is: – Slightly heavier – Dense – Hard to lift alone (for most people) Fake anti-borer plywood is: – Very light – Hollow-feeling – Easy to lift with one hand – Usually made from cheap softwood inside Why weight matters Termite-resistant plywood uses: – Hardwood core – Dense veneers – PF resin – Chemical treatment All of this increases density and weight. Cheap plywood uses: – Soft, spongy core – Low-density wood – Low resin – No core treatment That’s why it feels feather-light.

If you see any of these, reject the sheet immediately: – Tiny holes (even problem) – Powder falling from edges – Very light weight – No chemical smell – Poor bonding – Soft edges that dent easily – Lots of gap in the core These are clear red flags.

When you walk into a plywood shop, don’t get influenced by big words like “Termite-Proof,” “Borer Shield,” “Anti-Insect Technology,” or glossy branding. These words mean nothing unless the plywood actually passes the smell test, weight test, and core test. If the plywood smells right, feels heavy, and shows clean, resin-rich layers, it will last you years — no termites, no borers, no hollow sound, no surprise powder falling from your cupboards. With these simple checks, you can confidently choose safe plywood and protect your wardrobe, kitchen, and furniture from long-term damage.
