Fire-retardant plywood (FR plywood) is specially treated during manufacturing so that: – When exposed to flame, it resists ignition / delays ignition – Slows down spread of fire on its surface – Reduces flame penetration into the core – Gives occupants more time to react / extinguish fire The IS 5509 standard ensures that the plywood meets certain criteria related to flame resistance, structural integrity under heat, and safer bonding/glue

Because fire-retardant plywood involves extra processing, the cost per sq ft (or per sheet) is significantly higher than regular plywood. Based on recent online listings: – Many FR plywood sheets are listed by brand as per IS 5509, especially in 18 mm thickness. – One example of a 19 mm FR plywood (8′ × 4′) sheet shows up on retailer listings. – The general price range for good quality plywood (all types) in India is broad — ₹60 to ₹300 per sq ft, depending on type, grade, and finish.

Why does FR plywood cost more than regular waterproof or marine plywood? Because of: – Special chemical treatment: The wood and core are treated under vacuum/pressure with flame-retardant chemicals. – Hardwood core and quality veneers: Most FR plywood uses good hardwood for core + well-bonded cross-layer veneers. – Better adhesives / glue: To ensure flame resistance and structural integrity under heat. – Manufacturing standards and certification (IS 5509 compliance): Testing, certification, quality control — all add to cost. You pay extra for safety, long-term reliability, and peace of mind.

When buying FR plywood, check: – Stamp “IS 5509” clearly on sheets with license number and batch number – Brand name + datasheet showing fire rating / test results – Sheet thickness and core quality (don’t accept thin, hollow, or soft-core FR-labeled sheets) – Moisture content & glue type (good FR plywood will have proper resin bonding) – Compare weight and feel – FR plywood tends to feel denser due to the treatment

For many Indian homes: – If you use LPG/gas stove and your kitchen is enclosed – If you live in a high-rise or apartment block – If the kitchen is near bedrooms or main hallway – If you have wooden false ceilings, wardrobes, interiors close to cooking area → Then FR plywood makes a lot of sense. But if you: – Use electric cooking appliances only – Have a separate utility kitchen / open kitchen / chimney – Live in a single-storey stand-alone house, away from neighbours Fire-retardant plywood in India (as per IS 5509 standard) is no longer a luxury — it’s a practical
